Achebe was buried in his home in Ogidi,
Anambra State.
The Human Rights Writers Association on
Friday called on the Federal Government to
declare Professor Chinua Achebe’s home in
Ogidi, Anambra State, a national monument.
The National Coordinator of the
association, Emmanuel Onwubiko, made the
call in an interview with the News Agency
of Nigeria in Abuja.
Mr. Onwubiko said it would be one of the
ways to immortalise the intellectual and
cultural achievements made by Achebe.
“The declaration of the personal estate of
the late legend will be another way of
preserving the edifice for generations yet
unborn.
“It will also serve as means to appreciate
the gift of such an enormously talented
writer who put Nigeria on the world
positive intellectual stage,’’ he said.
Mr. Onwubiko said the association was
planning to organise a national human
rights lecture in Abuja to honour Mr.
Achebe. He urged the Federal Ministry of
Education to translate Mr. Achebe’s works
to enable people at the grassroots to
understand. He added that such translation
would enable greater appreciation of
enormous volume of creative works produced
by Mr. Achebe.
Mr. Onwubiko added that Mr. Achebe’s works
advanced the promotion and protection of
the rights of Nigerians.
Mr. Achebe was buried in Ogidi in Idemili
North Local Government Area of Anambra
State.
