NLC attributes insecurity in Nigeria to poverty

The Nigeria Labour Congress, has lamented the lingering insecurity in the country as well as the rising level of poverty.

The union attributed the security challenges in the country to the poverty among the people and urged the government to take measures to end the insurgency in the North-East.
Speaking to journalists on Monday in Abuja, the NLC vice president, Lucy Offiong, explained that the 2014 May Day celebration would be held under tight security, adding that bags would not be allowed into the event venue.
Offiong, who is the chairperson of the 2014 May Day committee said that, the theme for the celebration is, “building enduring peace and unity: panacea for sustainable national development.”
According to her, President Goodluck Jonathan, members of the cabinet as well as the Senate President and members of the diplomatic community are expected to grace the event.
She said, “We intend to use this occasion to re-commit the labour movement in Nigeria to our collective desire for peace and unity without which our search for sustainable development will remain elusive.
“Also we hope to use the May Day to reiterate our position that there is an intrinsic link between prevailing insecurity and poverty which has been engendered by corruption, mismanagement of the economy by rapacious greed of the ruling class who have continued to churn out policies in the interest of capital to the detriments of the
interest of the working people and other poor Nigerians.
“There is need to recognise the significance of shared prosperity as a basis for enduring peace and sustainable national development.”
The NLC VP encouraged Nigerians to support the security agencies by providing reliable information that could lead to the capture of terror suspects and other criminals.
She challenged the security agencies to ensure that the girls abducted by insurgents in Chibok, Borno state are rescued and returned to their parents.
