Onyeka Onwenu, present director general, National Centre for Women Development
(NCWD) recently disclosed that her organization is teaming up with
Tingo Mobile Limited to launch a phone with special applications to
assist women in distress in Nigeria.
According to the ‘Iyogogo’ crooner, the phone will address the lack of access information by women and also to assist them in trade facilitation.
She said the mobile device will also help to prevent violence against women and girls in the country.
“This application also has a feature with which by pressing a digit, a woman who is being subjected to violence or assault can contact security agencies in her vicinity,” she said.
“It is also being expanded and built upon, to help address the current security challenges in the country.”
She said they were also partnering with all security agencies in case of emergency, adding women at the grassroots would also have access to what the Federal Government was doing to empower them
“There is a number these women can press and engage all security personnel,” she said.
Dozie Nwaobasi, chief executive of Tango Mobile, said the application will connect buyers and sellers of products and commodities using their mobile phones to facilitate trade thereby boosting their economic profile.
He said the Tango mobile connects women to information, regarding government programmes designed to better their lives.
