Osun: APC, PDP clash

There was another bloody clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress {APC} and the Peoples Democratic Party {PDP} in Iponda, a community in Obokun Local Council.

The Iponda incident brought to two, bloddy clashes between supporters of both parties after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Rauf Aregbesola winner of the August 9 governorship election.

On Monday, unspecified number of people were said to have been seriously injured when the supporters of the two parties allegedly engaged themselves in violence in Ile-Ife area.

In yesterday’s bloody encounter at Iponda, members of PDP allegedly attacked supporters of APC in the area. Pandemonium was said to have broken out when APC supporters in the area were allegedly attacked by their counterparts in the PDP while they were celebrating the victory the party recoded in the Saturday’s election. Some people were said to have received deep machete cutand they were thereafter taken to hospitals where they are currently receiving treatment.

One of the victims, Deji Akanmu, who was said to have hailed from Ward 4 in Iponda, was stabbed in the head .

An Assistant Director in the Bureau of Communications and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Bosun Oyintiloye, while reacting to the ugly incident fingered the supporters of PDP as the aggressors, describing the action as barbaric.

Oyintiloye said the matter was reported to the police division in Ibokun, the headquarters of Obokun Local Council, and the Divisional Police Officer in the area promised that the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to book.

The Aregbesola’s media aide alleged that a chieftain of the PDP in the area, Chief Francis Fadahunsi, sponsored the attack. He also alleged that one Ope Adepoju was the leader of the thugs that launched attack on APC members in the area.

But in a swift reaction, PDP Director of Media and Strategy, Prince Diran Odeyemi, raised a counter allegation insisting it was APC members that unleashed terror on PDP supporters.

Odeyemi urged Aregbesola to curb what he described as the excesses of APC members. “We are surprised that despite that APC won the election, its members have continued to harass and humiliating supporters of our party in all parts of the state and this development is provoking.

“We called on Governor Aregbesola to stop them before this would get out of hand. They are the ones attacking us and they are the one crying aloud,” he said.

Also, former Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada urged Aregbesola to call the APC members

to order and stop them from unleashing mayhem on the people of Osun.

Answering questions from journalists at the investiture of Patrons and Board of Trustee Members of the Mass Movement for Goodluck 2015 (MMG) Tuesday in Abuja, Obada alleged that APC members, since after the announcement of the result of the election, have been going about killing and abducting members of the PDP and taking them to unknown destination.

She said: “Many PDP members were matcheted, some were chased away, we do not need this kind of violence in our body polity. After they have won, they are unleashing horror on people of the state and they are not calling them to order. They governor should stop this violence going on and never subject PDP members to any further humiliation and brutality.”
